After the fall of Rome, Western Europe was divided among Germanic tribes including the Franks, Vandals, Suevi, Burgundians, Anglo-Saxons, Ostrogoths and Visigoths who established their own kingdoms. The Eastern Roman Empire, also known as the Byzantine Empire, continued on in the east.
