Editor's Notes
-Introduce ourselves-Where we are from? (Students at Syracuse University, our major and we work the 3C Skills program developed by Professor Coplin at Syracuse University to help prepare students for the real world.)
Mahlet: First thing is first, what is skills for success and what does 3C Skills even stand for? skills for success is the slogan for the 3C Skills program. The 3C’s represent careers, college and citizenship. These skills that you will learn about and practice today are necessary for anyone that wants to be successful in the real world. Because You need skills to be successful in collegeTo get a jobTo become an accomplished citizen
Mahlet: What are these Skills that are so important for students to master. These are Coplin’s 10 skill sets in the Skill For Success approach. If you all take a look at the handouts that we gave you, it sates and defines what the 10 skill sets are and the 38 Skills that are under their umbrella. Now we will go in detail with some of these skills in a little bit.
Matt: The 10 skill sets have 38 skills These are the 13 basic skills you need in the real worldIf you master these skills, then you have an easier path in becoming successful in any environment; in work, college, and everyday life. You may think these Skills are extremely basic and a no brainer…but they are not. People don’t develop it enough, that’s why it is essential to practice and master them.
Matt: Well, so how do we develop these Skills? You develop these skills by simply practicing them one at a timeAnd that is what we are going to do today, we will practice some some of these skills
Matt: -We are going to warm up by discussing Spring Break. -Did everyone finish telling their stories? -Be honest. Is there anyone that steered off topic?
Mahlet: -Conversing One-on-One -Everyone thinks conversing One-on-One is easy right? You can’t go wrong with conversing One-on-One. False. Actually, there are plenty of ways to go wrong with Communicating One-on-One. The first thing you need to do is assess who you are talking to and the setting you are in; there is a huge difference in conversing with your best friend and conversing with your teacher or your boss. For example you would not say; “Yo Mrs. Ware I totes forgot my hw Can I bring it in tomorrow? ” to Mrs. Ware because that is not the appropriate way to address Mrs. Ware, instead you will say something along the line of, “I am sorry I forgot my homework, is it possible if I turn it in tomorrow?”
Mahlet: -What does motivate yourself mean to you?-Why is motivating yourself an important skill? Can anyone tell me?-you get things done, you will have a satisfactory work. -You will not only reward yourself in the long run, but it will also reflect on any work you do.
Give out candy.
Matt: -Well what does Sell Successfully mean?-Does anyone here work at a store?-What do you do to make a customer buy something?-Everyday we sell ourselves and sometimes we don’t even know it. What does that mean? Making an impression on the people we meet. Whether it is making friends in a new class or interviewing for a job. Bring out the best in you, that is how you make connections, that is how you will be successful in the real world.
Mahlet: The problem everyone has is that “We don’t have enough time in a day”, which is not true. Majority of the time we waste the time we have with these so called ‘Time Wasters’ whether it is watching a re-run of your favorite 90210 episode or being on FB for 3hours straight-we have all done it.The most important thing about Time Management is prioritize, prioritize, prioritize! If you have a 5-page paper due in two days and you have yet to start on it, but the season finale of One tree hill is on…TiVo it!
Mahlet: -Mrs. Ware told us about your portfolios, use them to organize; Utilize them well -classes- organization, motivation, identify problems, converse one-on-one, typing well -Jobs- interviewing, Excel, talking to people, developing solutions, typing well, -Staying in good health, converse-one-on-one, staying organized, remembering birthdays, paying taxes, making money
Matt:Lastly, I hope you continue to practice these skills.Everything is on our website: 3CSkills.org
