5. Types of Anesthesias Local anesthesia numbs the small part of the body that is the focus of the procedure. You are awake and fully aware. Regional anesthesia blocks pain to a larger part of the body. General anesthesia affects the entire body. You may get it through a vein, or you may breathe it in. Knocked out completely. You do not feel any pain at all and most people have little no memory at all of the time during or after the procedure until the medicine completely wears off.
