This document provides information about Spanish naming conventions and traditions. It lists common Spanish names for boys and girls. It explains that Spanish names typically include two last names - the father's last name followed by the mother's last name. It also describes the tradition of celebrating a person's "Día del Santo" or name day based on the Catholic saint they are named after. The document gives an example of how a woman's name changes when she gets married, adopting her husband's last name. It also notes that children take their father's last name and their mother's last name before marriage.

5. LOS NOMBRES ESPAÑOLES
• In Spanish names, usually every person has 2 last names; the name of the
father, which is put first after the first name, then the name of the mother.
These names are then known as the apellido paterno or primer apellido
("paternal surname" or "first surname") and the apellido materno or segundo
apellido (maternal or second surname) respectively.
• In Latin American countries, when a woman marries, she may choose to drop
her own maternal surname and adopt her husband's paternal surname, with
"de" ("of") inserted between. Thus if Angela Lopez Sajenz marries Tomás
Portillo Blanco , she may style herself Angela Lopez de Portillo . This
convention, however, is more a social styling than an official renaming such
as takes place in English-speaking countries: on official documents, she will
still be identified by her two maiden surnames..
• In most Latin American countries, people also celebrate their “día del
santo”.This is what is called a name day. Name Days are a tradition of
attaching personal names to each day of the year, and celebrating the
association of particular days with those for whom that day is named. The
tradition originates from the Christian Church calendar and the tradition to
name children after saints. Because approximately 98% of Spanish-speaking
people are Catholic, this is a tradition that has been followed for centuries.
• Not only are people named for saints, but Most (almost all) towns have a
patron saint, and a week long carnival takes place around the saints day.
6. HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW TO CONSTRUCT A SPANISH NAME.
SRA. HARRIS’ NAME BEFORE MARRIAGE WAS:
JAN MARIE SMART
IF SHE WERE TO WRITE HER NAME BEFORE MARRIAGE THE SPANISH WAY IT WOULD
LOOK LIKE THIS:
JAN MARIE SMART NOBLE
SMART IS HER FATHER’S NAME AND NOBLE HER MOTHER’S, SO HER
PRIMER APELLIDO WOULD BE “SMART” AND HER SEGUNDO APELLIDO WOULD BE
“NOBLE”.
NOW JAN MARIE SMART NOBLE MARRIES PETER HARRIS.
HER NAME WILL CHANGE, BUT ONLY TO ADD HARRIS TO IT. IT WOULD BE AS FOLLOWS:
JAN MARIE SMART NOBLE DE HARRIS AND SHE WOULD GO BY THE NAME OF
“SRA. HARRIS”
NOW HER CHILDREN WOULD TAKE THEIR FATHER’S NAME “HARRIS” AND THEN THEIR
MOTHER’S NAME BEFORE MARRIAGE,” SMART”. SO THEIR 2 LAST NAMES WOULD BE:
HARRIS SMART

13. The traditional Spanish greeting consists of 2 kisses, or "besos,"
one on each cheek. First the right cheek and then the left. It is
important to note these kisses are not directly on the cheeks, but
rather grace the cheeks and do not last, but for a second. For those
who do not wish to accept kisses it is perfectly acceptable
to hold out your hand for a handshake instead.
