Marian Anderson born Philadeplhia, Pennsylannia was an American
controlto. Anderson joined a junior church choir at the age of six, and
appliced to an all-white music school after her gradurtion from high
school in 1912 , but was turned away because she was black. She
contied her singing studies with a private teacher and debuted with the
New York Philmnicoms on August 26,1925 ans scored an immdeate
success also with cirtics.
In 1928 she sang for the first time at Carriage Hall. Her reputation was
further advanced by her tour though Europe in the early 1930s where
she did not encounter the racial predjecdues she had experienced in
America.
