Life can take a toll on your looks, especially your hair. Hair loss can have a profound
effect on self-esteem, triggering depression and so, ironically, and hindering recovery.
Stress, illness, medication, and age can all take hair that was once fast growing and
lush and turn it thin and lifeless.
Hairloss can range from mild thinning to total baldness
Shedding 50 to 100 hairs a day is considered normal, any hair loss more than this is
considered as significant hair loss
Causes:
Acute hair loss: Is a hair loss, which may occur in 2 to 3 months after a short-
lived triggering event, a detailed history is important to determine an accurate
timeline. No trigger can be identified in some cases. Regrowth is not visible for
4 to 6 months.
Chronic hair loss: Is a hair loss lasting more than 6 months, a range of triggers
can precipitate the hair loss.
A number of things can cause excessive hair loss. For example, about 3 or 4 months
after an illness or a major surgery you may suddenly lose a large amount of hair. This
hair loss is related to the stress of the illness and is temporary.
Anaemia -Iron deficiency leads to slow and uniform hair loss . Lack of Vitamin C and
consumption of caffeine and alcohol can also hinder iron absorption.
Severe protein, caloric restriction with chronic starvation and crash dieting can also
induce diffuse hair loss
Hormonal problems: If your thyroid gland is overactive or underactive, your hair
may fall out. Many women notice hair loss about 3 months after they've had a baby.
During pregnancy.Polycystic ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in women is caused by an
excess of male hormones which can trigger thinning at the front and top of the scalp.
Medicines:Blood thinners, medicines used for gout, high blood pressure or heart
problems, vitamin A (if too much is taken), birth control pills and antidepressants
Fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss
Can certain hairstyles or treatments cause hair loss?
Yes. If you wear pigtails or cornrows or use tight hair rollers, the pull on your hair can
cause a type of hair loss called traction alopecia. Hot oil hair treatments or chemicals
used in permanents (also called "perms") may cause inflammation (swelling) of the
hair follicle, which can result in hair loss.
2. Is there any other treatment for hair loss?
Depending on your type of hair loss, treatments are available Recognizing and
treating the underlying cause may help stop the hair loss. But certain adjuvant
treatment like laser hair comb hastens the hair growth.
