Dear Judges:
My name is Kimberly Norton, although I prefer to go by Kim. My plan for my
Senior Project was to swim a one-hundred yard freestyle race in fifty-six seconds. To
give you a better perspective, imagine a football field sans the end zones. My goal is to
swim from one end to the other in fifty-six seconds. However, it would not be a straight
swim; I would have to flip three times in the middle. It is sounds relatively simple in
context, but the execution will prove challenging.
My product is being able to swim a one-hundred yard freestyle race in fifty-six
seconds. My research paper illuminated the struggles I would face in trying to accomplish
my goal. For example, I would have to change how I viewed the race as a whole and also
review the mechanics of my stroke. Upon attempting to complete my product, I learned
that I was tougher, physically and mentally, than I had previously thought. My success in
this enlightenment carried over to other events that I swam, not just the one-hundred yard
freestyle.
Since swimming has become such an integral part of my life, I have toyed with
the idea of becoming a swim coach. I enjoy interacting with people as well as teaching
people to swim, so it seemed like a natural progression. However, I had to prove to
myself that I had the ability accomplish certain goals for myself in swimming in order to
help other people with their goals. Upon discovering that I can accomplish my personal
swimming goals, I feel more confident in my ability to assist other people in achieving
their goals. This process has helped me realize my full potential as a swimmer and an
instructor.
My thoughts about my Senior Project range from “I never want to see a pool
again” to “This is the best experience of my life.” Once I got over the initial shock that
this would be harder to accomplish than I initially thought, I realized that this had the
potential to become a wonderful opportunity for personal growth. I feel like I have grown
as a swimmer and a person in society because of this Project. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Norton
