Locality Development
 “Creating infrastructure aimed at impacting community-wide issues” (Swanke, 2015)
 Currently, the Dunbar neighborhood is lacking after school programs for the children within their community
who need additional guidance and support outside of their familial network. There is a need for children
within this community to have support coaches for sports as well as organizations such as Boy Scouts and Girl
Scouts that help promote character building and student success. Paul Lawrence Dunbar Community Group
Inc. will be receiving $600 per month from the city council to renovate the old Dunbar school as a place to
begin these after-school programs. (GLASSCOCK, 2015)
 “Community capacity building- using existing capital to increase community capital (human, financial, social, and
physical)” (Swanke, 2015)
 Human: Clarence Holliman has made a career out of helping children. His experience has afforded him a skill
set that would enable him to create and successfully implement these programs designed to help the youth in
that community. (GLASSCOCK, 2015)
 Financial: such as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts that help promote character building and student success. Paul
Lawrence Dunbar Community Group Inc. will be receiving $600 per month from the city council to renovate
the old Dunbar school. Financial assistance will also come from the community as they work on fundraising.
(GLASSCOCK, 2015)
 Social: The community will be encouraged to participate in fund raisers while the children benefit from the
newly implemented programs. This combination will promote the building of trust, pride, honesty,
cooperation and community involvement, thus increasing social capital. (GLASSCOCK, 2015)
 Physical: Part of this project includes the renovation of an old school building. This building will be restored
to a functional and appealing condition that will provide physical capital to the community it serves.
(GLASSCOCK, 2015)

Social Planning
 “Using rational problem solving strategies aimed at combating community problems”(Swanke, 2015)
 Criminologists have been analyzing what works to prevent crime and relaying that information to
government officials to reduce crime, enforce the law, and maintain criminal justice. Contributors to
the research include the World Health Organization and the United Nations. They have included the
analysis of their own research as well as others to identify risk factors and create strategies to combat
the problem. (Akter, 2015)
 “Passing laws or regulations to address community problems or conditions” (Swanke, 2015)
 Crime prevention strategies suggested by researches rely on the government to create and enforce laws, as
well as maintain criminal justice in hopes of reducing crime and deterring criminal behavior. (Akter, 2015)
 “Involves people from the community, people in power, and experts” (Swanke, 2015)
 Community members must take an active role in community prevention, one of the four major crime
prevention strategies mentioned in this article. The goal of this initiative is to change the social
conditions within and among families, peers, and social circle as well as cultures within institutions that
could contribute offending rate within the residential community. Educate members of the community
within schools and through special programs that will teach the community how to create an
atmosphere that deters crime (well lit streets, surveillance cameras, self-defense classes, etc.). (Akter,
2015)
 Experts and people in power are also needed for criminal justice prevention. Governmental bodies such
as law enforcement and criminal justice agencies enforce and create deterrents with enforcement of
current laws, speedy disposal of cases, and exemplary punishment by the judiciary system. (Akter, 2015)
Social Action
 Tile: After 5-Year-Old With Disability Was Bullied,
These Bikers Had Her Back

Social Action
 “Ability of people to confront and change the power structure and function of social
institutions in the community” (Swanke, 2015)
 The motorcycle group consisting of law enforcement, EMS personnel and firefighters spoke to
a 5-year-old child with an intellectual disability that had been harassed and physically
harmed by neighborhood kids. The motorcycle club members collaborated with a local
defense group, known as Shockwave. They showed up to her house to assure her that she had
support from the abuse of her peers. (Yam, 2015)
 “Often used in situations where serious inequity exits and those in power d not want to
correct it” (Swanke, 2015)
 The child being bullied by other children in the neighborhood had a mental disability that
challenged her ability to assert herself. The inequity of intellect provided an easier avenue
for bullying. (Yam, 2015)
 “Strength in numbers” is seen when there was a collaboration between several members of
the motorcycle group and members of Shockwave. United behind this little girl, she was
empowered. (Yam, 2015)
