At first I thought this assignment was pointless and was not going to change my views on
politics but I was wrong. I now realize that I need to keep up with the current events going on in
society and need to try to put my personal opinion out there.
There were a lot of topics that President Obama talked about but the most concerning
thing for me that he talked about was his opening statements. He started out by talking about all
of the things that has changed within the last couple of years. They were all good things that he
mentioned like out unemployment rate is getting better and that we are educating our kids at a
younger age. The thing that worried me was that I did not know about these issues.
I did notice throughout his speech that if would make a statement about a certain topics
like the healthcare bill and how women should pay the same for healthcare as men or trying to
reach out to our children at a younger age that only certain parts of the room would clap and
stand up. This concerns me and enlightened me on why we had the government shutdown.
People just cannot agree on how the United States should be ran.
The only topic that everyone could seem to agree on was when he honored a ranger
named Cory Remsburg. It seems that everyone agrees that current enlisted and veterans deserve
benefits and funding for not only physical disorders but also mental ones due to combat. Yes it is
a good thing that everyone can agree on this topic but what about all of the other changes
President Obama is wanting to make.
I am hoping that the Republicans and Democrats can come together better this year and
in the future then what they have been. Not just to stop the arguing but to make a more positive

move towards everything that President Obama talked about. Realistically there will still be
arguments and conflicts but if everyone puts America first in their hearts and puts their egos
aside I believe that all of us can make a difference.
