The DPA works in 2 ways:
1. It gives data subjects (individuals who are the subject of personal data)
certain rights
2. It also requires data controllers (those who collect and use
personal data) to be open about how the information is
used and to follow the 8 principles of ‘good
information handling’
4. You, the data subjects, can prevent
mishandling of information on you by being
aware of the purpose/s for which information
is being collected, at the time it is being
collected.

The Data Protection Commissioner and
the National Consumer Council have
devised this:
A symbol to act as a signpost which
tells you that personal information is
being collected on you.
