Blood to the
American Red
Cross
The Red Cross is one of the nation’s premiere providers of blood,
annually contributing more than 8,000 blood products and making
about 5.6 million blood donations to thousands of hospitals
throughout the United States. Every year an estimated 3.3 million
Americans make blood donations through the Red Cross, though
these individuals must first meet the organization’s criteria for
donating .
4. Donating
Blood to the
American Red
Cross
Making an appointment with the American Red Cross for a blood
donation is as simple as visiting the organization’s website at
www.redcrossblood.org. To begin, a person must be at least 17
years old to make an independent contribution, while individuals
of 16 years can donate if they are accompanied by a parent.
Donors must also meet certain height and weight requirements. A
standard donor must weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, though
additional requirements can apply to younger donors and to
individuals donating double red blood cells. In addition to these
stipulations, an individual should meet the organization’s
standards for good health. More details on the definition of good
health can be found online or by contacting a local American Red
Cross office.
