2. My name is Mel Wallis and from a very young age I have always
enjoyed drawing, creating and mark making. I studied Art at
Ridge Street Art College & West Herts College gaining a diploma
in Art & Design, BTEC Graphic Design and HND Graphic Design.
After leaving college I went into the print industry as a
printers apprentice learning all about reprographics, pre press
and the process of creation from the initial first drawing to
the final printed product whilst always continuing my drawing
and painting at home. My career took me on to become a Senior
Designer responsible for the day to day running of the Graphic
Design department. I went onto to freelance in this field when I
had my four children.
Moving to Milton Keynes with my family 8 years ago I sought out
the local art scene and attended courses ran by local artists
which was really inspiring. I enjoyed being involved with The
Drawing Machine founded by Sarah Wright and its work with
AHA, MK Fringe Festival, The Big Draw Event, CLN training
events, MK Gallery mini makers and working with the local
community. During this time I met some truely amazing people. I
am currently a Supershoes Artist which is something I am very
proud to be part of.
My work is influenced by the people I meet and the expression
that you can see in their eyes, its where you cant hide and I
hopefully capture this emotion in my work. I love going to
exhibitions of all different creative genres, absorbing images
and seeing artists individual styles especially in portraiture.
Using marks and playing with colour brings something different
to a piece of work which hopefully connects with the viewer. I
enjoy the freedom I have in creating art which is opposite to
the boundaries set in my graphic design work.
I m not creating art to make a statement or to change the world,
I create art because it changes my world
