This is a presentation i gave introduction www.threefarm.com and wwwmakersplace.org.au to a room full of interaction designers in Sydney, March 2015.
The point of my presentation was to make aware the listeners about collaborative work spaces (Makerspaces) for building hardware, the industrial revolution and the maker movement.
11. “Makers pump $29 Billion into the
economy each year”
– USA Today 2013

12. What is a Maker Space?
“Learning environments rich with possibilities,
Makerspaces serve as gathering points where
communities of new and experienced makers
connect to work on real and personally meaningful
projects, informed by helpful mentors and expertise,
using new technologies and traditional tools.”
- Definition by Maker Media 2013
27. “The overall market for 3D printing products
and services hit $2.2 billion in 2012, a growth
rate of almost 29% compared to the $1.7
billion in the industry recorded in 2011.”
- Wired, May 2013
Watch this space!
28. “Much of the growth in 3D printing from 2014
to 2020 will come from the healthcare and
aerospace industries.”
- Markets and Markets, Nov 2013
Watch this space!
29. “World demand for 3D printing is
projected to rise more than 20% per year
to $5 billion in 2017.”

Who am I
Where do I come from
What will I talk about today
Three Farm and our new initiative Makers Place located in Leichhardt

Where did I start?
St Clair
Mum and Dads involvement in Camp Quality/Lions Club
My first job was at KFC – My sister (assistant manager got me a job there when I was 13)
Played a lot of sport
Graduated in Year 12
I have a great careers adviser enrolling me into 2 TVET courses (Design/marketing)
Selected to go the Enmore Design Center - Diploma of Digital Media.
I thought I wanted to be a graphic designer!
EXPLAIN IMAGE
OSS Digital - sweeping floors and trimming posters here in Leichardt.
Mentor Greg
Greg convinced me to get an education on the job
For a whopping $35K I became a large format printing making huge graphics.
I loved making things. It helped me with process, systemizing and determination
Production Manger
Sandwiched between account managers, designs and the makers.
When I started in 2006 we had 5 staff
When I left in 2013 we had 42 staff – 28 of them were makers or designers and they reported to me.
I loved my job
I loved my bosess and team
One major problem! It was all kind of shallow.
Constantly surrounded by picture of modles and brands
Tired and weary
I had a awakening
I started questioning to our suppliers about materials
How is this made, what are the raw materials, where do they come from?
After hearing for myself
The penny dropped
I was playing a part in an industry that had no regard for its impacts
Sometimes these graphics would only go up for 1 day!
So much, resources, time and money
I worked at OSS Digital with co-founders of Three Farm, Grace Turtle and Yasmin Smith.
Collect the decent off cuts
Resize them
Make some cash by selling them
Save OSS some money too

Grace started getting a little more creative
We use FREE software
OSS’s state of the art cutting machine
And Offcuts
Major interest in Digital fabricaton. A form of Digital fabrication is 3D printing

WHAT IS DIGITAL FABRICATION
Grace and I decided we were going to buy our own printer
We bought the printer and had to wait for it to arrive
In the meantime we would spend countless nights chatting about the potential of this technology
Third Industrial Revolution
Democratization of manufacturing
Subtractive vs Additive

Makerbot arrived April 2013
We started with community workshops,
We now do professional development and consultaion
To put it simply Three Farm is a network of educators in the areas of design and technology.
We connect people with knowledge and tools to create change with not only their minds but with their hearts and hands.
We are trying to blur the lines between DESIGNER > MAKER > CONSUMER
I personally believ that the more people who know who to solve problems the more problems we will solve collectively.
The first industrial revolution took famers from the countryside to work in factories in the economical centres.
Society is looking forward toward a third industrial revolution
The crux of which is the emergence of lateral power distribution and the decentralisation of industry, though the marriage of renewable energy, internet technology, collaborative workforces, information sharing and ecologically-conscious industrial design and manufacturing.
3D printing is an IDOL for this.
It is becoming clear that the Second Industrial revolution is dying. What we need now is a bold new economic narrative that can take us into a sustainable post carbon future.
Jeremy Rifkin - A Industrial Revolution comes when a communication revolution arrives.
I am very fascinated about new ways of working and sharing.
Collaboration
Open Source / Knowledge sharing
Maker Movement
Commercial Cohabitation/Co Working
Tactile Urbanism
Every Maker could do with an Interaction Design
In particular I am inspired by Makers Spaces
A maker space is a co-working space with tools!.
Shared economy, lowers the barrier of entry for emerging entrepneures and desigers
MY TRIP FROM THE USA
What is TECH SHOP?
Everywhere I went I would ask why is this movement so prevalent in America.
The responses I got were quite interesting;
STEAM (Science, tech, engineering, arts, math) Activities had been eradicated by the Bush government
Alternative learning environments where being pushed by parents
American an passionate about Made in America
Renowned for their manufacturing ability
Until China took the cake!
Burners (Burning man) Also plays a big part of the MM in America
SQUARE
An electronic payment system created by Jack Dorsey. A small adapter, shown in the attached image, allows individuals to accept credit cards on their mobile devices.
The company recently secured $10 million in capital investment.
What is Tech Shop
Jack Dorsey didn’t need to buy a CNC Router or 3D printer, he only had to pay a membership to Tech Shop USA
EMBRACE INFANT WARMER
The Embrace Infant Warmer is an innovative product that costs less than one percent of what a traditional incubator costs. The designers, who hope to combat the issue of global infant mortality.
