Captive in Claustrophobia:
Acrylic and Doctor Plaster on canvas
24cm x 36cm
Claustrophobia is the fear of not being able to escape a closed area. This painting
reflects my own fear of being trapped in an elevator. The background of an optical
illusion magnifies the sense of helplessness felt by the entrapped individual.
The painting is also representative of the mental chaos an individual experiences
when he/she is swamped by infinite thoughts, opinions and expectations of society.
The man in orange is trying to escape from this state of mind.

Mistaken Identity:
Doctor Plaster and Acrylic on Wood
61cm x 28cm
The innocent Ronald Cotton holding his mug shot, imprisoned for a crime he
did not commit, hence, the title ‘Mistaken Identity.’ We discussed this story in
a TOK class and I was extremely touched by it. The events and consequences
of Ronald Cotton’s case were so interesting and moving that I decided to
create this piece, which is separate from the theme I have chosen in the IB,
‘fear’.
4. 4
This piece is based on the fear of being sexually harassed or abused. ‘Rape’ according to me
is the most gruesome act anybody could ever perform. It steals and tarnishes a woman’s
sense of confidence, self-respect and her reputation in society. Recovering from such an
incident demands a whole lot of courage and those women who redeem themselves are the
strongest warriors. In this piece, the victim is in control of her own state of emotions and has
recovered from the merciless act of rape, which is shown by the hand that comes out of the
heart, symbolizing ‘control.’ It stands as a symbol of hope for all victims of such cases.

Inaudibility:
Acrylic on Canvas
5ft x 3ft
The lion in this painting is indicative of my fear
of public speaking, as the act of it roaring in
distress is symbolic of the act of me attempting
to speak in front of an audience. The action of
shooting controls the inaudibility of the lion’s
roar and metaphorically symbolizes my failure
at being ‘heard.’
6. Golden Ager:
Stoneware Clay on Wood
25.5cm x 35cm x 52cm
The concept behind this sculpture is based on the fear of getting old or ‘losing’
one’s youth. The color gold elucidates how ‘precious’ and ‘valuable’ the old
man’s youth is to himself and the color black contrasts the power of gold,
adding to the dullness of old age.
The fear of old age is a common emotion felt by middle-aged individuals who
are perturbed by the idea of being unable to do most of the things they are
able to at a relatively young age. The fear of being secluded and forgotten by
others also plays a role in reducing one’s self-confidence and passion to live.
7. Collapse:
Dragon Fly – Wire and Acrylic on newspaper
12 inches x 16 inches - Acrylic and Photo Ink on Canvas
The dragonfly is trying to open the shoelaces of an individual. The tied
shoelaces signify the person’s fear of failure. A dragonfly in some cultures is
known as a symbol of power and thus, the act of it opening the shoelaces
indicates a transfer of power from a mere dragonfly to a human being, to face
one’s fears and take up challenges linked with unknown outcomes.
