3. Introduction
• VIIth craial nerve, mixed type, parasympathetic
• Nerve of 2nd branchial arch
• Master of Facial expression
• secretion and Touch pain temperature taste
sensation
4. Embryology
• 3rd week fascioacoustic primordium– VII and
VIII cranial nerve
• 4th week- chorda tympani seperates from
main trunk
• By 5th week-- Geniculate ganglion, nervus
intermedius, and greater petrosal nerve are
visible
• By 11th week- fascia nerve arborized
extensively
5. Anatomy
• Mixed nerve
• 1. Motor: supply to the facial muscles.posterior belly of
digastric, stylohoid and stapedius
• 2. Sensory: Sensory root (Nervus
intermedius/Wrisberg) joins motor root at fundus of
Internal Auditory Canal(IAC) , supply-part of post-aural
concha / ext. auditory canal and Tympanic membrane
• 3. Secretomotor: lacrimal, submandibular,
sublingual,nasal mucosa and mucous membrane
• 4.Taste: anterior 2/3rd of tongue (via chorda tympani
nerve)
9. Nuclear segment
• Motor and sensory root
• 4 nucleus-
branchiomotor (main motor)
visceromotor ( superior salivatory nucleus)
secretomotor parasympathetic fiber
special sensory ( tractus solitarus) taste
general sensory (upper part of spinal TG nucleus)
bipolar with cell body in geniculate
ganglon
