Understanding the Psalms and Why read them? (Sunnyside Wesleyan Church - Downtown)
1. PSALM 1
1 Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;2 but his delight is in the
law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
2. and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.4 The wicked are
not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the
judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the
righteous;
3. 6 for the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
5. Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of
the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits
in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of
the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that
yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not
wither.

16. C.S. LEWIS -
What must be said … is that the Psalms are poems,
and poems intended to be sung: not doctrinal treatises,
nor even sermons. … Most emphatically the Psalms
must be read as poems; as lyrics, with all the licenses
and all the formalities, the hyperboles, the emotional
rather than logical connections, which are proper to
lyric poetry. They must be read as poems if they are to
be understood; no less than French must be read as
French or English as English. Otherwise we shall miss
what is in them and think we see what is not.

18. N.T. Write " The Psalms contain unique poetry
expressing the biblical faith in God as Creator,
Redeemer, judge, lover, friend, adversary—the whole
lot. There is nothing like them. The Psalms go right to
the depths of the human emotions—they don't just
skate along the top. They explore what the great
promises of God mean and what we do when those
promises do not seem to be coming true."
