The Mapuche people are descendants of the Araucanians who settled in Chile around 500 AD. They spread south along rivers in Chile and as far as Neuquén province in Argentina. The most important Mapuche celebration is the Ngüllatün, a three day festival held once a year to pray to Nguenechén, the sun god representing the creator. During this time they make contact with God. The Mapuche diet focuses on fruits, vegetables, grains like wheat and pine nuts, and meats like sheep, boar, and lamb. Showing tourists traditional Mapuche foods attracts visitors and shares the flavors of their ethnicity.
