Compost is organic matter that has been decomposed and can be used as fertilizer. It is produced through composting, which can be either an active/hot process that uses controlled temperatures to quickly break down matter through bacteria, or a passive/cold process at a natural room temperature. Compost is used in agriculture and gardening to fertilize soil and in landscaping for erosion control and ground covering. Materials that can be composted include fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds, and kitchen waste.
