3. The Philippines is endowed with
rich natural resources. Misuse or
abuse of these resources affect the
quality of the air, the integrity of
land, and the characteristics of
water makes life viable for all
creatures.
4. FOSSIL FUELS
A fossil fuel refers to organic materials that have
experienced chemical and Physical Transformations
over a very long period of time.
These materials originated from the remains of the
plants and animals that lived and died millions of
years ago, and were buried , compacted , and altered
to become a wide range of substances that are
chiefly composed of carbon.
The term Fossil fuel is actually a misnomer, Because
the organic materials to become fuel, the organic
remains must decompose.
5. COAL
COAL is a naturally occurring black or dark
brown rock that is composed mainly of
carbon and small amounts of hydrogen,
oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur.
The remains of large plants that existed long
ago turned into coal after being buried,
compacted, and heated just enough to
‘’cook’’ the material.
At power plants, the coal is burned to
produce heat, which is turn applied to water
to produce steam.
6. But as the coal is burned , it also generates
by- products like carbon dioxide, carbon
monoxide, sulfur oxides, nitrous oxides,
particulate matter , trace metals, and
organic compounds that may pollute the
atmosphere.
The pollutants cause acid rain; the
particulates cause asthma and other
respiratory disease as well as aggravate
cardiovascular problems and diabetes.
7. PETROLEUM OR CRUDE OIL
Like coal, petroleum or crude oil is a
naturally- occurring material primarily
composed of hydrocarbons , which
are organic compounds composed
mainly of hydrogen and carbon.
It also comes from remains of
marine plants and animals that died
millions years
8. But in this case , the organic matter mist be
subjected to higher amounts of applied heat and
pressure compared to those alter organic matter
into coal. This alteration take relatively much
longer
The Philippines is not a major oil producer ,
although there are several areas that are being
explored for both petroleum and natural gas. Oil-
producing fields includes GALOC, NIDO, AND
MATINLOC, all located within the North west
Palawan basin.
The MLAMPAYA DEEP WATER GAS-TO- POWER
PROJECT is considered one of the greatest
industrial undertakings in Philippines History.
9. NATURAL GAS
Natural gas is a flammable gas
mixture consisting primarily of
methane, the most abundant
organic compound on earth.
The gas may be produce by
thermogenic or biogenic means.
10. Natural gas often touted as the cleanest of all
the fossil fuels; it produces less carbon dioxide ,
carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrous
oxide than either coal or oil. How ever , it is still
not a completely clean burning- fuel.
The MALAMPAYA gas field In Palawan supplies
the requirements of three power plants, which
produce a total generating capacity of 2700 MW,
as well as the gas requirements of Pilipinas Shell
Petroleum Corporation in Tabangao, batangas.
