Once in a Lifetime Event
Once in a lifetime event took place on the 20th of June 2016. It was a spectacular
occurrence that was much awaited by millions of people all over the world. The full moon and
the summer solstice coincided producing a splendid view. The event took place for the duration
of about nine hours. The period was enough for me to prepare and strategically position myself
to experience the wonders of nature. It was the first time I saw the moon coincide with the
solstice and it may be the last in my lifetime since it is a rare event that takes place after many
years. The summer solstice is usually the longest day of the year, but the incidence made a
special day for many for thousands of people around the globe. Solstice full moon last occurred
in the Northern Hemisphere in 1967. The event has been given various nicknames depending on
the locations and culture of the world. Certain regions of Northern Hemisphere calls summer
love. Strawberry moon, honey moon, hot moon, and longtime night moon as some of the names
used in various regions of the world to refer to the first full moon in summer.
The occurrence of the solstice takes place when the tilt of the earth’s axis is most inclined
in towards the sun in either the southern or the northern hemisphere. The astronomical alignment
of the strawberry moon and the solstice does not have any significance except that causes
excitement among astrologers and nature loving people like me. I could not afford to have a view
of the astronomical alignment since it will take another 46 years for the event to occur again. The

next full moon will coincide with summer solstice on 21st of June 2062. It was celebrating the
rare event since the next may not find me alive, and I will be too old to enjoy the wonderful
experience if at all I will be alive. The rare sight is referred to as the strawberry moon since it
marked the beginning of the strawberry season. Contrary to my expectation the moon had an
amber color. I expected to see a reddish moon after long hours of waiting. Astrologist attributes
the amber color to the fact that the moon hanged lower in the sky, and its light had to penetrate
through the humid and thicker sky. Despite being the longest day of the year, it was worth
staying outside on the night of 20th June 2016.
The full moon was one of its kind since it also marked the 4th of the four full this year.
Three full moons normally occur between equinox and solstice. Four full moons rarely occur in
time and space. The third full moon is usually associated with claims to fame. It is referred to as
the seasonal blue moon. On 21st of May 2016, the most recent blue moon before the solstice full
moon. Seasonal blue moon usually occurs after every 19 years. I witnessed the event live since
the weather was friendly. There were live telescope feeds and fascinating factoids to mark the
extraordinary day of light in a special way. Those who could not watch the rare site live had the
privilege to stream it live as it happened. I used my telephoto lens to enhance the experience and
capture amazing images of the rare events.
