5. Château d’Angers
Angers Castle is situated in the Pays de la Loire region, in the heart of the city in Angers, and is
surrounded by 17 towers. Inside you can discover residential buildings and gardens.
From the Neolithic period to the twenty-first century, this site has changed its use. First, it was a
defensive fortress and a nice residence of the Dukes of Anjou and after, it was a prison.
It was a residence of the Dukes of Anjou in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The castle was
decorated with residential buildings and gardens and later the gardens were transformed in an
exotic animal park. For 7 centuries, the fortress has been a prison. The castle served as provincial
prison until 1856, then as a barracks during the first half of the twentieth century, before opening
to the public.
6. Maison d’Adam
Inside the city of Angers one of the most singular buildings
is the "Maison d'Adam" and it is situated at number 1 in
Ste-Croix square.
The last renovation of the building in 1814 provoke the
disappearance of the original bright colors and became into
the actual grey which makes it less attractive.
7. This building was owned by the rich merchants of the
XV century and had the idea to make a beautiful
decoration on its façade. On this façade there are
different wood carvings and different figures such as
mermaids, musicians and lovers. Like this, the
merchants called the attention of your customers. The
façade shows mainly the "tree of life", but also, it shows
the religious themes as the Virgin and the Angel of the
Annunciation, St. Michael killing the dragon.
