Landfill project detail

1. Landfill site Achan:
1. The Landfill site has been established in the year 1985
comprising of 606 Kanals of land at Sidepora Achan.
2. This is the only Landfill site available with SMC as on
date for disposal of city garbage.
3. As per Master Plan this area has been earmarked as
Landfill site.
4. The surrounding of the Landfill site is mostly as
open/agriculture land. However, residential houses
have been erected towards the east side of Landfill
site in violation of master Plan.
5. Recently, SMC has formulated a Detailed Project
under the Asian Development Bank guidelines for the
said area on modern scientific mechanical pattern.
6. This shall improve the physical environment of area
and to achieve this:
 Separate approach road to landfill site shall be
constructed to avoid plying of refuse trucks
through residential area.
 The site shall be fenced all along with restricted
entry.
 A plantation buffer in the form of green belt
shall be developed on the outer periphery of
landfill site.
2. To improve physical environment short term
measures have been taken in light of directions of the
honorable High Court as detailed herunder:

2. 1. All the vehicles carrying refuse to Dumping Site are
provided with cover not to litter and expose
garbage in the Sidepora vicinity.
2. Proper soil cover over the exposed garbage
dumped at landfill site is carried out.
3. Proper chemical treatment to eliminate growth of
insects will be carried out on regular basis.
4. Periodical fogging /insecticides shall be carried in
the area to control vermin and flies.
5. Daily soil cover over the dumped garbage will be
undertaken to control odour and growth of flies.
6. No bio-Medical waste will be allowed to be dumped
at Landfill site Achan as all the major hospitals
have started destroying of Bio-Medical waste in
their Incinerators.
3. Long Term measures:
1. Identification of additional sites to reduce burden
on the existing landfill site as is envisaged in the
Greater Srinagar City Master Plan.
2. Regular monitoring of Air, Surface Water and
Ground Water will be regulated to check adverse
effects on physical environment of the area.
3. Periodical medical check up of staff and people
residing in close vicinity of the landfill site will be
carried out.

3. Total area of SMC limits: 280 Sq. Kilometers.
Existing Population: 11.25 Lac worked out on the basis of 2001 census.
Projected Population by the end of 2020: 18 Lac
Besides this there is floating population of approximately 5 Lac .
Garbage Generated daily 335 MT/Daily and 250 Lifted as on date
Projected Garbage generation 2020: 600 MT/Daily.
As per Srinagar Master Plan the existing landfill site has been earmarked as Landfill
(Garbage dumping site). Besides this three more sites have been also earmarked
which are being identified are Summerbug, Batapora, and Hakermulla Soibug.
ACHAN:
Total land: 606 Kanals and 17 Marlas.
Year of establishment: 1985
In the outskirts of existing landfill site situate at Achan 9 villages comprising
of Saidapora, Shonglipora, Waganpora, Sangam, Braywar, Danmar,
Guzerbal, Noorshah Colony and Bagh-i-Lal Pandith exist.
But except villages of Brywar, Saidepora extension and Danmar all other
villages fall 3-4 Kilometers away from the existing landfill site.
About some 80 houses fall within a 200 meter radius of Landfill site having
population of less than 500 persons which is restricted area as per
international norms.
Except some 20 houses all other houses have come up unauthorizedly in
turmoil period.
