1. A STUDY OF ACADEMIC STRESS AMONG SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN
HARYANA IN RELATION TO THEIR
SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS
2. INTRODUCTION
The present age is a competitive age.
Scientific and technological progress around the world has made man more
conscious and sensitive about his studies, vocation, life style, relationships, and so
on.
This tremendous progress has resulted in several Problems.
One of the major problems of today’s world is “stress.”
Academic achievement expectations have created so much fear among the students
that they are not able to utilize their basic potential.
In fact, according to a Lancet report, among people aged 15 to 29, India has one of
the highest rates of suicide.
Every day, 6.23 students commit suicide as a result of peer pressure; there must be
something wrong that we are not aware of.
3. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Despite the state's massive investment in education, students in Haryana's senior
secondary schools perform poorly academically.
Poor academic performance may lead to failure, which may lead to an increase
in the drop-out rate of students from school.
Increased dropout rates may increase crime rates, and students' chances of
admission to higher education institutions may become slim, resulting in
students' emotional instability as a result of their failure.
As a result, it is critical that the reasons for students' poor school performance be
identified and that a proper and timely plan be developed so that a student can
perform to his or her full potential.
This study will investigate the impact of socioeconomic status of students on
their academic performance in schools.
4. All of these elements call for an analysis approach that is more
formal, methodical, and intensive.
A systematic investigation structure must be involved to improve
student performance in various spheres, to introduce an
atmosphere conducive to intellectuals, and to reduce stress on
students.
The current study is a modest attempt to answer the question,
"Why do students feel stressed, and is this stress related to their
socio-economic status?"
Or is there a difference in stress levels among students based on
their gender, location, or educational background?
5. WORK PLAN AND METHODOLOGY
• Study the topic's efficacy and develop a research strategy with the
help of her Guide.
Prepatory Phase
• Selection of senior secondary schools.
• Survey of schools.
• Conduct interviews of students and their parents/teachers and to
give questionnaire to them.
Field Work Phase
• Analysis of the study
• Interpretation of the study
• Verification of the study
• Conclusion of the study
Analytical Phase
6. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
Studying secondary school students' mental health and their
academic stress is one of the goals of this project.
To research the socioeconomic standing of secondary school
students.
To investigate the connection between secondary school
students' socioeconomic position, mental health, and academic
stress.
7. HYPOTHESES
The following hypotheses will be tested in this study:
There is no significant relationship between academic stress and senior
secondary school students' socioeconomic status.
There is no statistically significant relationship between academic stress
and socioeconomic status in senior secondary school boys.
There is no statistically significant relationship between academic stress
and socio-economic status in senior secondary school girls.
8. TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES TO BE USED
The investigator firstly will choose favorable sampling technique and
the due consideration will be given to all parts of the sample selection
criteria while choosing the sample for the study.
The sample will be chosen at random (i.e., probability sampling
technique will be used), and
It will afterwards be stratified into various segments in accordance
with the study's objectives (i.e., non-probability sampling approach
will be used
The chosen sample is known as a stratified random sample .
9. 1. Following tools would be employed to collect the sample data for the
present study:-
Bisht Battery of Stress Scale (BBSS) developed by Abha Rani Bisht (1987)
Socio-Economic Status Scale developed by R.L. Bhardwaj (1978)
2. The following independent and dependent variables will be correlated using
the Person's Product Moment method to determine the relationship between the
following variables:
Academic pressure and senior secondary schools' socioeconomic status
Boys in senior secondary schools' academic stress and socioeconomic status
Senior secondary school girls' socioeconomic status and academic stress
10. SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE STUDY:
It is also possible to compare the academic achievements of pupils from rural and urban
areas.
A representative sample of another set of students, such as B.Ed./M.Ed. students etc., may
be studied.
The current study only includes a sample of pupils from only Jind District of Haryana state.
To better understand the factors being studied, the study may be repeated on a large sample.
The study may be broadened to include additional elements, such as lack of a supportive
environment , ample study materials, etc.
A comparative analysis could be carried out for the study of academic stress among the
students of different districts or states .
