The crested ibis is a large white bird with pink wings and a long black beak that once lived throughout East Asia, but its numbers declined rapidly in the second half of the 20th century. People in Japan have tried protecting the birds in a special facility, adopting a bird from China to artificially hatch chicks, but if these attempts fail and the last crested ibis dies, this type of bird will be extinct.
