Turmeric, derived from the Curcuma longa plant, has a long history of traditional use in India and China. It has characteristic yellow color and is a member of the Zingiberaceae family. Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has shown anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It may help reduce amyloid-β plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease by helping macrophages clear the plaques. Nanocurcumin formulations can improve the water dispersibility and bioavailability of curcumin.
