Modi's clean india drive to impact maharashtra girls
1. Modi's Clean India drive to impact Maharashtra girls
Marking the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra
Modi launched on 2 Oct 2014 "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" (Clean India
Mission), India's biggest cleanliness drive, which would cost over Rs.62,000
crore. Terming the mission ‘beyond politics' and completely inspired by
patriotism, Modi compared it Mahatma Gandhi's war cry of "Quit India"
during the Independence movement and stated, "the way we derived
pleasure from Quit India, we will derive the same pleasure from Clean
India."
It is also mention-worthy here that toilets are also the part of this "Clean
India" drive, which has now taken centre stage in Maharashtra elections to
2. be held on Oct 15 on 288 seats. Unfortunately, even after the 15 years of
Congress-NCP rule, 47% households of Maharashtra lack toilets. Moreover,
2,447 government schools running mostly in rural areas have no separate
toilet for girls leading to their dropouts.
Wielding the broom in Nagpur while participating in "Clean India" drive,
Maharashtra BJP chief Devendra Fadnavis opined that toilets are a necessity
long neglected in Maharashtra government schemes. Commending PM
Narendra Modi's detailed plan for toilet construction in rural and urban
areas, Fadnavis stated that Maharashtra BJP has also incorporated plans for
separate girl toilets in rural and urban Maharashtra in its vision document
for 2014.
Expressing concern over schools without girl toilets, Fadnavis added that it
is a major obstacle in the women education in state. He promised that
Modi's clean India drive would cover and impact wider areas all across the
length and breadth of state, if BJP comes in the power winning the state
assembly elections 2014.
