of cholesterol in the blood. Some people have
an inherited syndrome, which causes very high
levels of cholesterol. Untreated high cholesterol
raises the risk of heart disease and
cardiovascular problems.

• Hypercholesterolemia causes include:
• Your genes (pure or familia hypercholesterolemia).
• A diet that includes a lot of saturated and/or trans fats.
• A lack of exercise.
• Tobacco products.
• Obstructive liver disease.
• Diabetes.
• Hypothyroidism.
• Anorexia nervosa.
• Chronic kidney failure.
• Nephrotic syndrome

• Lose extra pounds and maintain a
healthy weight
• Quit smoking
• Exercise on most days of the week
for at least 30 minutes
• Drink alcohol in moderation, if at
all
• Manage stress

• Eat a heart-healthy diet. Focus
on plant-based foods, including
