1. The main interest in Darfur, Sudan for the U.S. is the recent findings of major oil fields,
not to help stop the current genocide. In September 2004, Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell
gave a speech in Sudan to tell the world that genocide is taking place in Darfur. The U.S.
suggested that the solution to this issue was to "demand the United Nations impose sanctions
on one of the poorest countries on earth and that U.S. troops be sent there as
“peacekeepers.”" The UN took the previous actions of the U.S. into consideration and decided
not to send troops. They remembered that the U.S. lied about attacking Iraq and said that they
had "weapons of mass destruction" which was false. However, the U.S. imperialists are happy
because they believe that the Darfur campaign further proves that Arabs and Muslims are a
demonizing race. All that the UN and U.S. are currently doing is overseeing refugee camps in
the neighboring countries of Sudan. People have been protesting Washington to try to help
save Darfur, but it's not helping because the UN refuses to allow the U.S. troops to invade
Sudan. The easiest and most effective way to help now is to donate or sign up for the volunteer
program and just take a step towards making Darfur a better and safer place for people to live.
