On April 25, 1998, the hazardous waste storage raft at the Aznalcóllar pyrite mine
(Seville) caused a spill of six million cubic meters of acids and toxic waters. The
discharge ended up affecting the Guadiamar River and extended to the periphery
of the Doñana Natural Area

scientists warn that there are still rafts of this type in Spain, and that they may
suffer a similar accident at any time
