In Romania, Christmas is celebrated on Christmas Eve when families decorate their Christmas trees in the evening. Carol singing by children going house to house is also a popular tradition, where they sing and dance in exchange for sweets, fruit, cozonac (traditional cake), and sometimes money. Traditional Romanian Christmas foods include roast gammon made from a killed pig, ciorba de perisoare which is a vegetable soup with meatballs, sarmale consisting of cabbage leaves stuffed with ground pork served with polenta, and cozonac fruit bread.
