  1. According to the Dell Global Technology Adoption Index, organizations that have successfully leveraged data over the last three years grew almost twice as much as those who did not: 14 percent versus 8 percent. The benefits of becoming data-driven are real: properly leveraging data does lead to competitive advantage.
  2. The same study found that, while 61 percent of organizations said they have data that could be analyzed, only 24 percent of organizations understood how to extract value from data and are pursuing it.
  3. The perception that big data is more hype than reality, the investment and risk that comes with change and modernization, and data silos and are seen as the biggest challenges to adoption. The #1 hurdle remains determining the value of data. Customers are struggling with defining a strategy, with leadership or organizational issues, and may even still be trying to understand what big data is. The success of data initiatives is strongly linked to collaboration between IT and the business. Without clearly defined business goals and metrics, big data initiatives can get derailed or fail to achieve ROI. We counsel our customers that data projects cannot be bottom-up IT intellectual innovation exercises. They must be driven by a desire to solve significant business challenges, IT and business leaders must be committed to collaborating, and the right people need to be granted access to the right data. Having the proper skills and analytics maturity and tying projects to measurable performance metrics are also key success factors. The next hurdle we encounter is that older technologies can’t keep up with the demand to derive value from data. They hype around big data has been dominated by the newer technologies like Hadoop. But our customers paint a different picture. The Enterprise Data Warehouse continues to be at the center with newer technologies needed to augment it so that the organization can support the collection, processing, management, integration, and analysis of a wide variety of data sources using the best technology for the task. In addition, data initiatives, due to their experimental nature, need an infrastructure that can scale to support unspecified and unpredictable workloads. And as users embrace self-service access to data, BI, and analytics, siloed data environments limit business teams’ access to all the data and analytics they want and need to make better, faster decisions. Data is spread across different systems that are not integrated, and multiple platforms for different types of data have created siloed tool chains run by separate IT teams. These silos affect IT’s ability to respond quickly to business teams’ requests and shadow IT emerges as the business finds a way to get access to all data.
