2. Personal Statement Psychology has been a topic that has fascinated me since high school. Now it is my one true love. The complexities of human behavior have never ceased to engage me. In the beginning of my undergraduate academic career I was admittedly undecided whether I wanted to pursue a career in psychology or whether I wanted to pursue a career in journalism. However, after taking my first psychology class it was clear to me which direction I would take. Now I am happily about to graduate with my bachelors in psychology with a concentration in substance abuse. Graduate school is the next step for me, and honestly I am quite excited to begin this new chapter of my life. In graduate school I plan on getting my Master’s degree in clinical psychology, and then continuing on to get my Psy.D. Throughout my academic career, I have been fortunate to have had a number of wonderful teachers and mentors who cultivated and inspired my love for psychology. As this part of my academic career ends and a new one begins, I am looking forward to the fresh academic challenges, and inspirational individuals that I will no doubt meet. 4. Reflection After looking over and reflecting on the past few years and the work I have completed, I see a number of different strengths and weakness in each of these areas. Cognitively, I think this program has taught me how to think critically about problems to come up with solutions. I feel I am better able to utilize logic, and make better decisions in my personal and professional life. Furthermore, this program has also helped me build my knowledge of how to research, and put together research projects. I am now able to collect academic information, analyze, and organize sound research projects. I have learned the core principles of psychology, and have begun to learn how to apply some psychological theory in hypothetical cases. This program has effectively taught me the history and application of psychology. It has also taught to be aware of diversity in every aspect of life. The work samples that I have collected show a glimpse into the wide range of knowledge I have collected throughout this program. This program has also taught me how to better work interpersonally with individuals and how to communicate more effectively. I am more likely to consider all aspects of a situation and factors that may contribute to my behavior and other’s behavior than before. Moving forward, I hope with further education I am able to develop more in these areas academically. I hope the best to any individual embarking on this academic journey in this psychology program, and hope for the best in my own academic endeavors.

6. Critical Thinking Cognitively, I think I have learned how to analyze and think critically both professionally and personally. The work sample that I used to display my critical thinking skills is a paper I wrote for a Psychology of Women class that I took. The assignment was to develop a list of resources for women to utilize in the community, and develop a community program designed to aid women in the community receive the care they need for a variety of social issues. Assignments such as this have helped me cultivate how to effectively utilize resources available to problem solve. Research is an area of psychology that I enjoy extensively, and I feel this is one of my strengths. The work sample provided for this area of competency is a research paper I wrote for my research methods class. The paper is a research project I designed to analyze the impact of abortion on women and their mental health. I feel that my communication skills are very strong as well. The work sample that I have provided is a Power Point presentation, and research paper analyzing the impact of gender biased language on women today. I have taken many gender and ethics classes throughout my academic career at Argosy University, and I feel that I have developed a greater sense of the importance of culture in influencing individual behavior. The last three areas of the Student Self Appraisal of Learning are Foundations of Psychology, Applied Psychology, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. In each of these areas, I feel I am quite strong. My classes at Argosy University have taught me the foundations of the field psychology, and the theories that drive it. My teachers have been wonderful at bringing in real world applications of psychology. I have done role playing and have begun to learn the tools to be an effective helper. I am looking forward to continuing with this learning in graduate school, and cannot wait to learn more about each of these areas moving forward.
7. My Future in Learning Reflections on Being a Life Long Learner Learning is a passion of mine, and I feel especially in the field of psychology I am hungry for knowledge always. Learning excites me and gives me a sense of self satisfaction that I do not think I could acquire any other way. If I had it my way I would stay in school, and collect degrees for as long as possible. I think continuing to learn and grow as an individually academically is so important. I hope to continue to learn and grow as an individual in all of these academic areas, and look forward to all of the new experiences and knowledge I will acquire in my future academic pursuits.
