5. ROMANS 2:1-5 NASB
Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment,
for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who
judge practice the same things. And we know that the judgment of God
rightly falls upon those who practice such things. But do you suppose
this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things
and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or
do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and
patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to
repentance? But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart
you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation
of the righteous judgment of God,
6. for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
ROMANS 3:23 NASB
7.
8. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is,
that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
ROMANS 12:2 NASB
9. TESTING GOD’S WILL
• Noah – Gen 6:13 So God said to Noah, "I am going to put an end to
all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am
surely going to destroy both them and the earth.
• Abraham – Gen 12:1 Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go forth from
your country, And from your relatives And from your father's house,
To the land which I will show you;
• Joseph – Gen 37:5 Then Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to
his brothers, they hated him even more.
Rom 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
Rom 1:21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Rom 1:22 Professing to be wise, they became fools,
Rom 1:23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
Rom 1:24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.
Rom 1:25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
Rom 1:26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural,
Rom 1:27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.
Rom 1:28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,
Rom 1:29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips,
Rom 1:30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,
Rom 1:31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful;
Rom 1:32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
Reading Romans 1 brings a shock to our system. It’s language appears very unkind and judgmental. The point here is that we need to understand that when we talk about the pattern of the world vs the pattern of the kingdom these are two very distinctly opposite realities. The pattern of this world for God is not merely some lesser “economy class” life it is detestable, He hates it because it destroys His creation and separates us from Him. Paul here as in many other places joins with the rest of scripture to establish for us that we really need salvation. He rveals to us the dangerous pattern of depravity that this world follows.
Impurity – Allowing contamination, for something to come in contact with that wish damages and erodes it.
Degradation – From the latin word degradus; “de” meaning down, “gradus” a step or grade. Degrade to lower in grade, rank, or status; to lower to an inferior or less effective level degrade the image quality.
Depravity – Latin DE – down, thouroughly and PRAVUS – crooked perverse. To pervert the meaning or intention of something.
The Jews loved to talk about the corruption and wickedness of the Gentiles but Paul reminds them that all man is in the same boat. This pattern of depravity is present in all of us. Therefore …
We are not to approve the pattern of the world Romans 1:32 but to prove (test) what the will of God is.
God’s will is good, it benefits us and is not impure and corrosive.
It is acceptable and pleasing it does the opposite of degrading us to an inferior or less effective state.
It is also perfect and complete, it brings us back to complete state of what God intended us to be not the depravity of perverting the meaning or intention of something.
Noah’s revelation of God’s will gave him knowledge of unknown things and therefore God gave Him the exact steps to take. - Gen 6:14 "Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall cover it inside and out with pitch. "This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. "You shall make a window for the ark, and finish it to a cubit from the top; and set the door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. "Behold, I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish. "But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife, and your sons' wives with you.
Abraham revelation of God’s will required movement without clarity of destination –
Joseph’s revelation of God’s will put him in conflict with those close to him. Because he had the vision but not the heart.
Knowing God’s will must radically change your life. It is a journey of moving into the fullness of God through testing and proving. In some sense it is responsible trial and error. It is a very active process. You cannot sit safely on your couch and wait for the risk free plan that you completely understand and is perfectly able to do before you can get going. God gives you what you need to get you started and then He promises to be with you every step of the way. You see for God it is not merely about you getting to live right and do the right thimg. He hates sin because it separated you from Him but He loves the journey of salvation because it brings you back to Him. He misses His walks with man in the garden, He wants to walk with you in the cool of the day. Trust His ability to lead you into the perfect pattern of His will.
