This document summarizes a tool called Racefix, which statically analyzes Java programs to automatically fix data races. It was created by researchers at the University of Illinois, including advisor Danny Dig and developers Caius Brindescu, Cosmin Rădoi, and Loránd Szakács. The project had research, implementation, and testing phases, and involved analyzing open source projects to gather needed transformations and using test-driven development and pair programming.

The research phase comprised mostly of theoretical work

Each of us would look through up to 10 open source-projects
and gather data related to transformations needed to
parallelize loops.

We worked iteratively on the modules using pair programming.

➲ Testing was done in parallel with
development given the fact that we've used
TDD to build our tool.
➲ This method is extremely helpful for projects
that are extremely data-driven, e.g. code
analyzers

11. Conclusions
➲ Would have OpenProj been useful?
Not really, in a three man team with dynamic
behavior and flexible design/development
stages it would have been mostly a burden.
➲ What was actually useful?
Sharing the same office and using git and
github.com. Git's commit history was more
than enough to track the project's status.

12. Writing the Paper
➲ After the tool was tested and used on real-
software systems we've written an
academic paper that has yet to be
published.
➲ This was, as well, a collaborative effort
