This presentation presents two approaches to constructing a dynamic model to represent change behavior typified by the theory of punctuated equilibrium. Each approach is then discussed and compared. The first approach uses a composite model comprised of the concept of homeostasis and steady state from the traditional open systems model together with a dissipative structure model which is based on a thermodynamically non-equilibrium principle. In this approach, the convergent phase will be modeled by applying the concept of homeostasis and the reorientation phase will be modeled by applying the dissipative structure model. The second approach uses the theory of self-organization (or the self-organizing systems model), which also includes the thermodynamically non-equilibrium principle. The explanation provided by the second approach for the existence and continuance of a convergent phase is that the fluctuations generated from outside and/or inside the system are normally not powerful enough to push the system across the stability threshold. These fluctuations thereby are absorbed or dampened by the system itself. If, on occasion, these fluctuations are powerful enough, they will push the system across the stability threshold into the instability region in which the organization, as a complex system, will self-organize or transform into another form and this characterizes the reorientation phase.

I've been asked to put together a basic (and therefore relatively quick) introduction to Lean Six Sigma & DMAIC. While it’s not yet finished, I thought I would put it out there for people to comment on. Since the presentation is supposed to be training material there’s more text on the slides than I would prefer, but there are a few exercises and games to get the trainees involved. I've put the PowerPoint version on my blog: http://alesandrab.wordpress.com/2013/06/07/introduction-to-lean-six-sigma-dmaic/
