In this lesson, students will learn how to use the phrase: ?Hace cuanto tiempo que...? to describe how long ago they did something or how long they have been doing something.

2. You can ask when something happened in Spanish by using: ¿Cuándo + [preterit verb]…? • ¿Cuándollegastea la clínica? When did you arrive at the clinic?

7. However, if you wish to ask how long ago something happened or how long something has been happening, you will use the Spanish phrase: ¿Hacecuántotiempoque…? or¿Cuántotiempohaceque…?

8. It doesn’t matter which form you use --the phrases are interchangeable. ¿Hacecuántotiempoque…? or¿Cuántotiempohaceque…?

9. Generally, if the verb is in the present tense, the question means, “(For) how long have…?” In this case, theactionorsituationcontinues in thepresentorisongoing. If the verb is in the past tense, the question means, “How long ago did…?” In this case, there has been a time lapse between the present moment and the conclusion of the action or situation.

10. The period of time that follows the word ‘que’ can be expressed by using a specific numeric amount: treshoras dos días unasemana seismeses un año
