4. DESCRIBE CONTEXT & ATMOSPHERE
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Leelight/76/102/688
The gallery location I have chosen to describe is located in a mountain area
and quite simple in its design and layout. I’ve come to appreciate this
simplicity because I find many of the destinations I have traveled to to be a
little confusing and overwhelming at times, this site suits me.
The building itself is also simple, and rectangular in shape. There is no roof
which makes it easy to figure out where you are.
As far as the demographic, no one is here so I’m guessing this may or may
not be a very popular location and perhaps people prefer the over the top
areas of second life.
Each floor of the building allows you to travel easily through, in some other
galleries I’ve visited you have to travel up the stairs which I have not
mastered the navigation in second life and find I run into a lot of things.
This location, you click a button and you are transported from one floor to
the next.
IN A NUT SHELL I CHOSE THIS LOCATION FOR
SIMPLICITY OF NAVIGATION.

7. DATA COLLECTION
This was an epic fail, I couldn’t get anyone to talk to me. I literally asked over
30 people and only 2 responded in a nice way. Most of the others cussed me
out and called me names and said I didn’t belong. Literally said I didn’t
belong and that I wasn’t like the others. I actually am shocked at how I was
treated when all I was asking for was a couple of questions, it was like I was
selling knives door to door and no one was buying. Every time I’ve been on
second life I have been cussed at, and in fact the time before this I was
pushed off a cliff. Not sure how you’re supposed to get anyone to talk to you
unless you’re there for fantasy activities.
I tried to talk with people in art galleries and art related places but still no
luck. It seems everyone is there to talk trash and be mean. I couldn’t get
anyone to respond like a normal person. Almost everyone turned their back
on me and ran away. Which makes me wonder about my avatar compared to
theirs…it was obvious they made theirs into a fantasy and were not
interested in talking with anyone about things in the real world like art.
Shocked in general with how I’ve been treated in second life.

9. DESCRIBE AVATAR BEHAVIORS
Some of the things that are happening when our class meets is social
interaction. We drink coffee, play music, and talk to each other. We are
also able to make gestures such as sounds and movements that are
unique to us.

11. COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS & CONCLUSION
I wish I was able to answer these questions better if I had actually found people to interview but
again I couldn’t get anyone to act like a normal human. As an artist myself I could see how this
method of interaction could be useful as long as people are there for the right reasons. It would
allow you the outlet to show your art to more people than you would in an actual gallery.
If I were to show my art in second life I could answer the questions as follows.
Q.What Artwork Forms and Methods do they use? [Art form--draw, costume, sculpture]
My method would be acrylic and 3d modeling which I think would work quite well in second life.
[Method-uploaded art work--becomes a texture; or built one on SL].
Q.What does their artwork mean--Expressions? [Mood, symbol, story, socio/political idea?]
My art is for no one but me. I like to paint when ever I get the urge to be creative and I have to
get it out through art. I also am a musician which I think could be really interesting on second
life, probably for me more interesting than art in general. I believe this because you are able to
listen at a good quality and still feel the emotion from the artist, I feel like some of the art work
comes across as flat and you are unable to see and feel the textures. But music, could be really
a good outlet for second life.
Q.What are their Art Preferences? [dress, dance, architecture, paint, travel]
My art presences also include sculpture which can be seen throughout second life, along with
architecture. I think I could have some fun with some of my actual designs and getting people
to interact with them and get real feedback.
