An introduction about database, their types, centralized database, its definition, advantages and disadvantages.Distributed database, its definition, advantages and disadvantages. The basic difference between centralized database and distributed database.
2. “A database is any organized collection of
data”.
Some examples of databases you may
encounter in your daily life are:
◦ a telephone book
◦ T.V. Guide
◦ airline reservation system
◦ motor vehicle registration records
◦ files on your computer hard drive
6. History:
The first ever created computers were overly
expensive and did not have separate terminals. Thus,
the need for centralized computing quickly arose. As a
result, a way for data to be not just processed, but to
also be organized and stored was discovered. This gave
way to the earliest versions of databases, their
respective database management systems (DBMS) and,
in turn, centralized databases.
An example for a centralized database could be given
with the Australian Department of Defense, which
centralized their databases in the mid 1970s.
7. Advantages of Centralized Database
Data Integrity
Data Security
Better Data Preservation
Easier to use
Easier Database Administration
Low Cost
Easily Accessible
8. Disadvantages of Centralized Database
Highly dependent on network
connectivity
Low Efficiency
Single point of Failure
