March
1969 – Golda Meir became the first female
Prime Minister of Israel.
The Coastal Road massacre of 1978 was an attack
involving the hijacking of a bus on Israel's Coastal
Highway in which 38 Israeli civilians, including 13 children,
were killed, and 71 were wounded. The attack was planned
by Abu Jihad and carried out by the PLO faction Fatah.
The 1979 Egypt–Israel Peace was signed in Washington,
D.C. on 26 March 1979, following the 1978 Camp David
Accords. The Egypt–Israel treaty was signed by Egyptian
President Anwar El Sadat and Israeli Prime
Minister Menachem Begin, and witnessed by United States
President Jimmy Carter.
4. Dish of the month: Sabich
Ingredients (4 people)
4 hard boiled eggs peeled and sliced
4 pita bread
2 tomatoes, finely diced
½ English cucumber, finely diced
½ small white onion, minced
1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 large eggplant,
peeled, halved and sliced ¼-inch thick
Canola oil
hummus (bought or make your own)
prepared tahina (bought or make your own)
½ cup fresh parsley, chopped
mango pickle, harisa, or hot sauce of
choice
5. Toss together tomatoes, cucumber, onion, and
lemon juice in medium-sized bowl. Season with
salt to taste.
Pour enough oil to coat bottom of 12-inch
stainless steel skillet set over medium-high heat.
When shimmering, add as many eggplant slices as
will fit in one layer. Cook for about four minutes a
side, or until they are well browned on each side.
Remove slices and drain on paper towel. Add a
few slices of eggplant, slices of hard-boiled egg,
salad, Hummus, tahina, parsley, and hot sauce of
choice in a Pita.
