1. Reflection Paper – Lisa Witteman – November 1, 2013
Listen, Learn and Identify Story Characters – Engaging students while promoting
memory retrieval with musical and narrated audio prompts.
The intended audiences are Music, ELA and Special Education teachers for
common core professional learning credits
Goal: The podcast will model how to employ audio strategies to promote
students engagement and recall of story characters.
Objective 1.1: The podcast will provide a model of employment of musical
character prompts for grade level stories utilizing “Peter and the Wolf “, by
composer Sergei Prokofiev.
Objective 1.2: The podcast will provide a model of employment of story
character narrations for grade level stories utilizing “Big Pumpkin”, by Linda
Silverman.
The podcast started with a simple script to explain purpose, personal
experiences, and introduce clips. I recorded the script narration and saved it
in an Audacity project file. Next, I researched YouTube and downloaded Peter
and the Wolf and employed a previously YouTube download of Big Pumpkin. I
converted the video downloads into .wav files, created feature character
clips, and imported them into their marked areas in the narration previously
saved Audacity project file. Audacity transport, tools (selector, time, and
magnifier) and effects (fade in and out) were implemented to create a
smooth and clear final audio podcast presentation.
