 
It is important to properly care for a skin tear to
prevent infection. Bacteria can easily enter exposed
flesh, therefore the area needs to be taken care of
immediately.
 
1. Rinse the area with normal saline solution.
 
2. Pat the area dry with a gauze.
 
3. Apply triple antibiotic ointment to the area.
 
4. Apply a Band-Aid or telfa depending on the size of the tear.
 
5. If the skin tear is an area that may cause the telfa to detach, wrap the area with a roll
of gauze to protect the telfa.
 
6. Dispose of the soiled gauze in the correct bin. If the gauze contains blood it must be
put in the bio-hazard container.
 
Although it doesn’t seem very complicated, caring for a skin tear is very
important. Proper care for an open area exposing flesh will help prevent the
start of infection.
