The Physiology of
fear and why people
watch scary films.
• Fear is an emotion induced by a perceived threat which
causes entities to quickly pull far away from it and usually
hide. It is a basic survival mechanism occurring in response to
a specific stimulus, such as pain or the threat of danger.
• This hypothesized set includes such emotions as
joy, sadness, fright, dread, horror, panic, anxiety, acute stress
reaction and anger. Fear should be distinguished from the
emotion anxiety, which typically occurs without any certain or
immediate external threat.
Why people like to watch
Horror Film
• The Excitation Transfer Process:
• According to Glen Sparks, one reason for the appeal is how
you feel after the movie. This is called the excitation transfer
process. Sparks’s research found that when people watch
frightening films, their heart rate, blood pressure and
respiration increases. That means that any positive emotions
you experience – like having fun with friends – are
intensified, he said. Instead of focusing on the fright you felt
during the film, you recall having a great time. And you’ll want
to come back for more.
Different Wiring
• Some people are simply wired to enjoy high levels of
physiological arousal. According to the literature, about 10
percent of the population enjoys the adrenaline rush. (Not
surprisingly, these individuals also love rollercoasters. Not
surprisingly, I do not.)
