Summer Safety Tips
With Memorial Day around the
corner and the official start of
the summer season, we at Pop-
A-Lock of Wilmington thought
we’d share with you a few tips to
keep your home and family safe
while enjoying longer summer
days and warm nights and the
beach.
Here are our top five tips for
a safe home this summer.
1. Backyards should always be safe – The back yard is a haven of
danger. Power tools, lawn mowers, trimmers and more are all normally
stored in the back yard. Keep these things locked up with a quality,
weather-resistant lock. Such a lock keeps burglars at bay and kids from
turning tools into potentially deadly toys.
2. Watch the windows – Windows are a prime target. If you do not have
a home security system, use a block on the window to keep it from opening
too much. Be sure the window cannot be opened from the outside as well.
3. Family meeting spot – No one wants to have a house fire, but they do
happen. Always have a plan for escape and a place to meet when outside.
This goes for any family outing like a park, fair, zoo or mall. Set a time; set
a place. It is always best to plan ahead.
4. Smoke detectors – It is always best to check smoke detectors monthly,
but many do not bother. Batteries will fade and die, and you will know by
the chirping sound the detector makes. A good idea is to change the
batteries when you change the clocks each year, or at the very least give
them a good check. Updating detectors every 10 years is also a good idea.
Your local fire department can help you, as can a certified electrician.

5. Have a spare – Summer time can be hectic. Keys can be misplaced.
Have Pop-A-Lock of Wilmington cut you an extra house key and car key. Put
one in a secure location around the home and one with a neighbor or family
member that you fully trust.
We hope you have enjoyed these tips from your friends at Pop-A-Lock of
Wilmington and we hope you enjoy your summer!
