1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
The first thing that I picked up on while watching Horror movie openings was the
introduction titles all had some type of relation, in watching the opening titles for the
movie Scream I noticed the introduction titles and sound effects in the background such
as quiet screams, this hints the genre of horror. Then I watched Freddy v Jason opening
and in the introduction titles I again noticed there was sounds effects on top of the
already scary music, adding this has a great effect and this is that it establishes the
genre of the movie almost instantly. Which is what we intended because we don't want
our audience to be puzzled and unaware of the genre of our movie, so if we try to
establish it from the early stages of the film then it may get them to understand the rest
of the film and what genre it is.
After watching a numerous amount of Horror film openings I seen that all of these films
were successful in cinemas etc, this is what made me choose to have scary sounds on
top of the already scary music because all of the low budget horror movies never added
the scary sounds and these films never got big.
2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
In many other horrors they use mid-shots,close ups & POV
shots frequently as these three all fit the horror genre better
because mid shots give you the sense of characters being
watched, close ups show audience something they need to
see in detail e.g. a face injury or a characters facial
expression when something scary happens and the POV
shot creates tension within the audience. I watched a lot of
horror openings and I seen a lot of these types of shots, I
gathered that they were included for a particular reason and
they must have an effect so I chose to include these shots a
few times in our film just to establish the genre of the movie.
3. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
My media product uses many forms and conventions of real media products, it contains
similar things that I've seen in another horror opening while doing research into other
genres at the start of the project, for example, I watched a clip Resident Evil and it went
from the introduction titles to a close up of an eye, this scares the audience a little and
it is also a great method to use to establish the genre of the film opening. We took this
idea and included it in our film opening in order to give our audience the same reaction
that we received when watching the Resident Evil opening.
We also liked the background music in Resident Evil
so after a bit of browsing on the internet we found a
site that had lots of different sound effects and music
and we found one that sounded similar to the
Resident Evil music, we chose this because we
wanted something that would build up tension with
the audience but also establish that the genre of the
movie was a horror.
4. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Again we got an idea from watching the Resident Evil clip, this idea was for after the close
up of the eye the audience will see a character led on the floor just waking up, they use
this in Resident Evil too and this shows the audience that the character may have fell
asleep or previously been in danger and is now waking up feeling puzzled on what's
happened. We chose to include a shot similar to this because we wanted a mid shot and
he's just waking up so it gives the audience the sense of him being watched, and this could
be associated with the horror genre and this is exactly what we wanted in order to gain the
highest possible marks.

5. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Although our media product uses and develops forms and conventions of real media
products we also challenged real media products and chose to do particular things
different to what your 'traditional' horror would be.
Firstly instead of having death and violence in our film opening we chose to have a
different type of horror, our horror contained bugs/insects which would later on kill the
character in the movie. This challenges other real media products because majority of
horror films contain violence and deaths caused by another human or from ghosts etc.,
or there is a total different type of horror like psychological horror.
By challenging other real media products we thought we would show something different
but try to get the audience is scared as they would with a traditional horror movie, we
tried doing this by the music as it creates a lot of tension.
6. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Another way we challenged real media products is by the location of our film, unlike most
horror films ours is filmed indoors, this may be considered as less scary because a
character would be safe indoors but in this case they're not.
We chose to film indoors because it then makes it seem as if the character is locked away
and being watched and has no escape, if the audience feel this too then this will create the
tense atmosphere that we planned.
By doing some things different and not just copy the traditional horror storyline I believe
that it has brang out the creativity in me whereas if I had done a traditional horror storyline
it wouldn't have been as hard to think of a story because it would have just been a copy of
a real media product but with a few changes in it to make it original.
