Merck has several existing digital projects in Africa and a strategy to expand its digital presence. It currently has an online and mobile diabetes risk assessment questionnaire available across multiple platforms to raise awareness of diabetes prevention and treatment. It also supports MobiDawa, a mobile app startup for diabetes patients, through consulting and networking. Merck's strategy is to continue supporting internal digital marketing projects, partnering with startups through acceleration programs, and expanding innovation initiatives across Africa.

7. We are Merck – the original
In 1887, Merck opened its own office in New York, which gave rise to the subsidiary Merck & Co.
three years later. As a result of World War I, this subsidiary was expropriated in 1917 and has been
an independent company ever since 1917. Merck – the original – holds the global rights to the
Merck name and brand.
Exceptions are Canada and the United States, where we are known under the EMD brand,
which stands for "Emanuel Merck Darmstadt“.
