Sentencing Proposal Lana C. Mabry CJA/305 September 14, 2015 Paul Croushore Running head: SENTENCING PROPOSAL 1 SENTENCING PROPOSAL 2 Sentencing Proposal In the State of Georgia some would say that the sentencing is too harsh when it comes to non-violent crimes. There are offenders who are receiving 10-20 years for crimes that are not violent. There should be some adjustments made in order to reduce jail and prison overcrowding and the price that citizens are paying. For some crimes such as petty drug crimes or even theft, offenders should receive probation or even maybe parole depending on the circumstances. There should be proposals that reform America’s criminal offender sentencing and community supervision programs, probation and supervision in the country, and the costs associated with imprisonment (Virlee, 2015). Offenders can still pay for their crime by being on parole or on probation. They would continue to be obligated and able to pay restitution to their victim and to the state, while at the same time learning their lesson. They are also able to attend certain classes such as Alcohol Anonymous and Anger Management. These are classes that may direct offenders into the right direction. This is a sentencing alternative that can work out and it can benefit a lot of people. Some may argue there is a notion that community supervision may simply be yet another created form caption of a longer circuit on the way to prison, it is not the only problem plaguing our modern criminal justice system (Virlee, 2015). In actuality, community supervision is another alternative for putting non-violent offenders back on the street without ruining the life that they have left. You have to come to the realization that prison is not always a positive solution. Offenders do not always receive the proper help that they need in order to be released back into society and to become productive citizens. Realistically and financially, this is a better solution to try without putting violent offenders back into society before they are ready. The prison systems has been overcrowded for so long that they are running out of options to implement because of the risk that they pose. You have to keep in mind that the main goal is to protect the public at all cost. With that being said, physically the citizens are being protected, while they are also able to give their input to the problems that are going on in their community. Reference Virlee, C. J. (2015).
