Discussion: Ethics and Standards Codes of ethics and standards are documents that express the ethical and professional ideals of a profession. They outline the aspirational practices that are expected in a profession but often do not provide explicit guidance on how attainment of these ideals should be accomplished. For instance, in this course, you focus on the National Organization for Human Services’ (NOHS) Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals. Standard 14 states, “Human service professionals are aware of social and political issues that differentially affect clients from diverse backgrounds” (NOHS, 2015). The actions or behaviors necessary on the part of the professional to meet this standard may differ from client to client depending on the cultural background of both the professional and the client, the experience of the professional in working with similar clients, and the resources available to the professional for professional development. The best use of professional codes of ethics, then, is as a tool to inform ethical decision making by all professionals in a given field. For human and social service professionals, the NOHS standards may be used as guideposts for acting in the most professionally and ethically responsible manners. Dilemmas sometimes arise between standards and laws, or two conflicting ethical perspectives, in which case the standards may be used to minimize ethical harm to those groups to which professionals are beholden. For this Discussion, you reflect on your professional identity as a human and social services professional and consider how the NOHS standards impact your professional identity, decisions, and actions. To Prepare: Review and consider the NOHS website and the Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals. The NOHS ethical standards are organized into sections based on those groups to whom human and service professionals have professional responsibility and to which the standards should be applied. Chapter 9 Other Important Aspects of Group Work There are other aspects that are important to discuss in relation to group work. In this chapter, I’ll discuss diversity, ethics, and research on the effectiveness of groups. Diversity Being aware of cultural diversity in the group and leading the group so that every member of the group, regardless of culture, is treated with dignity and respect is important. The ACA code of ethics addresses cultural diversity in several ways. Concerning informed consent in the counseling relationship it states, “Counselors communicate information in ways that are both developmentally and culturally appropriate.” It continues by stating, “In collaboration with clients, counselors consider cultural implications of informed consent procedures and, where possible, counselors adjust their practices accordingly.” In the section on confidentiality and privacy, the code addresses counselors being aware and sensitive to cultural meanings of confidentiality and privacy. Concerning the assessment of clients, the code addresses multicultural issues with this statement, “Counselors select and use with caution assessment techniques normed on populations other than that of the client. Counselors recognize the effects of age, color, culture, disability, ethnic group, gender, race, language preference, religion, spirituality, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status on test administration and interpretation, and they place test results in proper perspective with other relevant factors. Singh, Merchant, Skudrzyk and Ingene (2012) prepared a document for the Association for Specialists in Group Work on this topic. They define multicultural as “the belief systems and typical daily activities of people from various diverse groups, and denotes that attending to the needs and values of these diverse groups ensures a more vibrant, dynamic, and empowered society overall. Examples of multicultural identities include (but are not limited to): gender identity and expression, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious/spiritual traditions, ability status, migration status, age, and social class.” Singh, et. al. discuss competence in group performing and processing related to group diversity. Group workers demonstrating multicultural competence will: establish group norms to accept, value and respect cultural differences; attend to differences in acculturation levels; avoid stereotyping and labeling; demonstrate just and fair leadership; address overt and covert cultural conflicts in group; respond to language needs; incorporate traditional and spiritual healing methods that are culturally appropriate; use culturally grounded frameworks and techniques as appropriate; and use culturally-appropriate assessment and evaluation tools. Introduction For professional membership organizations, a code of ethics has many purposes for educators, practitioners and students. Ethical codes define acceptable behavior and responsibilities in practice and education (Burger, 2008). They promote the welfare of clients, providing assurance that established and widely accepted standards will be followed (Corey, Corey & Callanan, 2011; Vesper & Brock, 1991). They also moderate the influence of personal values in professional practice (Spano & Koenig, 2007), thus promoting the stability of professions (Remley & Herlihy, 2010). They represent the consensus of members in a profession (Scalise, 2000) and signify the maturity of a professional organization (Wilcoxon, Remley, Gladding & Huber, 2008). Finally, following a code of ethics protects practitioners in malpractice suits and provides professional organizations self-control instead of potential regulation by government (Corey, Corey & Callanan, 2011; Dolgoff, Loewenberg & Harrington, 2009). Despite their usefulness, difficulties are inherent in ethical codes. Codes cannot replace decision-making processes to navigate ethical dilemmas (Dolgoff, Loewenberg & Harrington, 2009). They immediately become outdated as new laws, social policy and social problems perpetually arise (Neukrug, 2010). Further, ethical codes do not encompass all of the values of an organization’s members (Spano & Koenig, 2007), nor do they include all possible clinical situations (Remley & Herlihy, 2010). Finally, laws can override an organization’s code of ethics (Burger, 2008). Although not exhaustive, the above information addresses the impact ethical codes can have on a profession. Therefore, it is important to consider how codes are developed and revised.
