1. Lighting Roles
Lighting Designer- Works alongsidedirector, choreographer,
set designer, costume, designer and sound designer to then
create lighting for a performance. They also know how to
create powerful medium of light and they know how to
create effects that can change moods.
Production Electrician/ Chief LX-
Lighting technician/ Assistant Electrician- They produce the
lighting effects for theatre and live events. They work from
doing basic spotlightingto then operating strobes, lasers etc.
Working alongside someone else they will need to interpret a
lighting designers plan, carrying out risk assessments so that
everything is safe, rig up the lighting equipment,operating
manualand computer-controlledlighting systems and many
more.
Lighting Programmer- Being a lightingprogrammer means
you could design what lights are going to be used at different
times, sitting at the board yourself, and demandingcues for
spotlights at specific times. They need to have good
communicationskillsdue to the job role is communicatingto
the lighting designer is a key part of the role as you are the
one revealing their ideason how they want the lights to be
shown.
Lighting (Board) Operator- These are the peoplewho
continuallysit at the board and have control of the lights.
2. They need to know how to turn on and boot up the
computers which control the lights, they MUST know the
basic programming commands and they need to ensure
before each performance they have checked all the lights.
Spot Operator – They are the ones responsible for making
sure the spotlight comes on when the cue is needed and
making sure they are following the key thing/person they
should be. They have to go to all the performances to ensure
that they know exactly what they are needed to do. They
spotlight/ followspot is controlledmanuallybe an operator.
