Costume
1. Costume and Props
Costume and props are very important in the media industry as it gives an
idea of the characters personality, their surroundings and how they live
there life. Costumes are made to be realistic to make the film as real as
possible. I will be comparing 2 film genres to see how each genre have a
typical ‘ costume’ and how it relates to each genre. I will also be finding
films as examples for each genre.
The two genres I will be comparing is horror and ……
This is because I am familiar with these genres and think that I can find the
biggest contrast, similarity's and differences between them.
2. Genre One - Horror
The villains costumes in most horror films are
dark and usually black, grey or red as there
dark colours connote danger and other things
associated with horror films. The costumes are
also very covering for example the photo on
the left is from the film scream which the main
villain is dressed head to toe in black to hide
his identity. Props are also used like a mask to
again hide the identity of the killer. This also
adds mystery and tension to the film which
keeps the audience waiting and wanting to
know the identity of the villain. This is the
stereotypical costume for a villain but it is used
in lots of horror films including V for Vendetta,
dark shadows and Dracula.
3. Genre two – Sci-Fi
Sci- fi films have very different outfits
depending on the context and the plot of
the film. On the photo to the left in the film
men in black there is a big contrast
between the hero's and the villains, one
reason being that the hero's are human
and the villains are aliens.
The hero's are dressed smartly with smart s suits on and ties which show
how professional they are and is stereotypically what the ‘good guy’ wears
in sci - fi films for example police, military or in the men in black films alien
hunters. The villains on the other hand are made to look different using
special effects and post editing production. This is too create a difference
between the hero's and the villains and so that the audience can see a
contrast and can tell who is who.
