fulfilling joy
1.
2. Philippians 2:1-5 Therefore if there is any
consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love,
if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any
affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by
being like-minded, having the same love,
being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let
nothing be done through selfish ambition
or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each
esteem others better than himself. 4 Let
each of you look out not only for his own
interests, but also for the interests of
others. 5 Let this mind be in you which was
also in Christ Jesus,
3. PHILIPPIANS 2
A. Paul ended chapter one by admonishing the
Philippians to live worthy of the gospel. -
Philippians 1:27-30 Only let your conduct be
worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I
come and see you or am absent, I may hear of
your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with
one mind striving together for the faith of the
gospel, 28 and not in any way terrified by your
adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition,
but to you of salvation, and that from God. 29 For
to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not
only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His
sake, 30 having the same conflict which you saw in
me and now hear is in me.
B. He begins chapter 2 by admonishing them to fulfill
his joy and their purpose.
4. I. IF THERE BE ANY… Phil 2:1
A. “If there be therefore any consolation in Christ?”
(1a) – Consoling when in distress. - 2 Corinthians
1:5-6 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us,
so our consolation also abounds through Christ.
6 Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation
and salvation, which is effective for enduring the
same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are
comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.
B. “If there be any comfort of love?” (1b) – Love is a
great comfort in times of trouble. - 2 Corinthians
1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all
comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation,
that we may be able to comfort those who are in
any trouble, with the comfort with which we
ourselves are comforted by God.
5. I. IF THERE BE ANY… Phil 2:1
C. “If there be any fellowship of the Spirit?” (1c) –
Fellowship = kononia (sharing common things). - 1
Corinthians 12:12-14 For as the body is one and has
many members, but all the members of that one
body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.
13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one
body--whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or
free--and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
14 For in fact the body is not one member but many.
D. “If there be any affection & mercy?” (1d) – Feelings
of good will. - Colossians 3:12-13 Therefore, as the
elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender
mercies, kindness, humility, meekness,
longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and
forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint
against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you
also must do.
6. II. FULFILL MY JOY… Phil 2:2-5
A. By being like-minded (2a) – Same mind and
intent - Philippians 3:15-16 Therefore let us,
as many as are mature, have this mind; and if
in anything you think otherwise, God will
reveal even this to you. 16 Nevertheless, to
the degree that we have already attained, let
us walk by the same rule, let us be of the
same mind.
B. By having the same love (2b) – Same
concern for welfare - Romans 13:8 Owe no
one anything except to love one another, for
he who loves another has fulfilled the law.
7. II. FULFILL MY JOY… Phil 2:2-5
C. By being of one accord & mind (2c) – One purpose
- Acts 2:46-47 So continuing daily with one
accord in the temple, and breaking bread from
house to house, they ate their food with gladness
and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having
favor with all the people. And the Lord added to
the church daily those who were being saved.
D. By doing nothing through selfish ambition or
conceit (3a) – Concern only for self - 2 Corinthians
12:20 For I fear lest, when I come, I shall not find
you such as I wish, and that I shall be found by
you such as you do not wish; lest there be
contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath,
selfish ambitions, backbitings, whisperings,
conceits, tumults;
8. II. FULFILL MY JOY… Phil 2:2-5
E. By being lowly in mind & esteeming others as better
than ourselves (3b) – Humility
1. Ephesians 4:1-3 I, therefore, the prisoner of the
Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling
with which you were called, 2 with all lowliness
and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with
one another in love, 3 endeavoring to keep the
unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
2. 1 Peter 5:5 Likewise you younger people, submit
yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be
submissive to one another, and be clothed with
humility, for "God resists the proud, But gives
grace to the humble."
F. By looking out for the interests of others as well as
our own (4) – Concern for others - 1 Corinthians
10:24 Let no one seek his own, but each one the
other's well-being.
9. II. FULFILL MY JOY… Phil 2:2-5
G. By having the mind of Christ (5) – Becoming a servant.
1. Philippians 2:6-8 who, being in the form of God,
did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,
7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the
form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness
of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man,
He humbled Himself and became obedient to the
point of death, even the death of the cross.
2. 1 John 2:3-6 Now by this we know that we know
Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who
says, "I know Him," and does not keep His
commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in
him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love
of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we
are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought
himself also to walk just as He walked.
